New Lunchtime Bus Route on Trial: Citybus Route 73X

On 29 June 2026, Citybus started operating a special lunchtime-only bus route, 73X, between Cyberport and Wong Chuk Hang Station, on weekdays as a trial service until 25 September. The bus route sets off from Cyberport at 12:30 noon and returns from Wong Chuk Hang Station at 2 pm. The bus route only makes 1-2 stops at Aberdeen before directly arriving at the destination. The adult fare for the bus route is HK$8.0, which is 50 cents cheaper than GMB route 69A running the same route.

End of an era: farewell to Citybus Route 77A

On 24 July 2024, Citybus route 77A made its final service from Shau Kei Wan to Tin Wan. As a victim of the bus route reorganisation, the bus route was cancelled due to the commencement of a new bus route, 770, which coincides with the routing of 77A. Many bus enthusiasts came to Shau Kei Wan on that day for a final ride on the bus route to pay tribute to the bus route established in 2018.

Final service

The final service was made by an Enviro500 MMC with fleet number 5822. The first one in the queue was a bus enthusiast which have arrived at the terminus early in the morning, and later the terminus was filled with a group of youngsters who are bus enthusiasts as well. Some bus enthusiasts had prepared umbrellas to shade from the hot sun, and some went to the nearby MTR station to hide from the strong heat.

A bus enthusiast expressed that the reason he came was to say farewell to the bus route as a victim of bus route reorganisation. Another said that he hoped that the new bus route could be cheaper as it was far more expensive than the other cross-harbour bus routes.

Ten minutes before the departure of the service, the queue was so long that some people would have to stand on the road. Moments before the bus opened its doors, many bus enthusiasts rushed towards the door, and when it opened, they quickly filled every space on the upper deck, and smartphone cameras were stacked by themselves on the front windscreen.

On the other hand, the lower deck was crowded with a group of bus enthusiasts, and they almost crammed the entrance doors. The bus enthusiasts cheered as the bus left the terminus. However, some passengers would request others to move into the compartment. Some even alighted midway through the journey as they could not deal with the crowded, hot compartment.

Meanwhile, the bus operator deployed another Enviro500 MMC, a 12.8-metre-long bus (fleet number 6428), as an extra service, and some passengers took this service instead. The buses arrived at Tin Wan at about 7 pm and 7:20 pm respectively. When the final service reached the Tin Wan bus terminus, a bus enthusiast stuck a route map from an unknown source on the bus stop sign.

Other service changes

Other than the cancellation of bus route 77A, Citybus routes 77 and 77X would also change their service hours from 27 July 2026, with the first service of route 77 and 77X departing at 5:40 am and 7:40 am respectively.

Transfers made easy: The New Aberdeen Tunnel Bus-bus Interchange

A new bus-bus interchange at Wong Chuk Hang near the southern portal of the Aberdeen Tunnel utilising the old toll plaza, the Aberdeen Tunnel Bus-bus Interchange (the "Interchange") was opened on 26 July 2026, with all bus routes serving the Aberdeen Tunnel observing the Interchange. On the same day, Citybus started operating bus route 770 as an express service linking both Eastern and Southern Districts. With the new Interchange opening, the bus network through Aberdeen Tunnel would be made easier and more flexible for passengers.

Citybus route 770

Background

As part of the complement of the Interchange, in March 2026 the Transport Department suggested the reorganisation of the 77 bus route series with this bus route being established, as stated in the 2026-2027 Bus Route Planning Programme. The bus route would serve Quarry Bay and Sai Wan Ho, and cover most places in Eastern District.

On 16 July 2026, Mable Chan, the Secretary for Transport and Logistics, and other representatives visited the new Interchange and were photographed in front of a bus with the destination display showing bus route 770. The next day, the Transport Department and Citybus announced the Interchange would open on 26 July 2026, and bus route 770 would also start operating on the same day. Citybus promoted the bus route, stating the journey would be cut by twelve minutes compared to bus route 77. On 24 July, district councillors of the Southern District were invited to try out the new bus route, with one claiming the new bus route travelled from Aberdeen to North Point in just twenty minutes. However, the transport group "Eastern Transport" found that the bus route only served a small section of the express portion of the bus route and the congestion at the Canal Road Viaduct would hamper the advantage of the new bus route, and thus described the bus route as a "fake express" bus route.

Route details

The bus route serves local stops in most Southern District bus stops between Tin Wan and the Interchange, as well as Chai Wan and Siu Sai Wan, and between Shau Kei Wan and North Point. The express sections were present between Shau Kei Wan and Chai Wan, and between North Point and the Interchange, with no intermediate stops in between, as it ran on the Eastern Corridor (Route 4). The bus route runs every day at around 20-minute intervals during most of the time. The adult full fare is HK$14.5, with multiple section fares along the bus route, and discounted fares when changing at the Interchange.

The first service

Due to the tropical cyclone in the early morning of 26 July 2026, the first services of bus route 770 departed later than usual, at 12:40 pm, when the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 was issued as a replacement of the Gale and Storm Signal No. 8. About twenty to thirty people, mostly bus enthusaists, gathered at the Chai Wan (East) bus terminus for the first westbound service to Tin Wan. On the other hand, a handful of passengers waited at Tin Wan for the first Chai Wan-bound service.

Aberdeen Tunnel Bus-bus Interchange

The new Interchange, mainly hosting Citybus routes, is served by all bus routes serving the Aberdeen Tunnel. The original bus stop (which was now Wong Chuk Hang Hospital bus stop) was not designed to serve bus routes to and from Stanley, and the Transport Department suggested moving the bus stop northwards in order to serve these routes. The new interchange features electric fans for ventilation, and information boards to direct passengers to their correct bus routes. The entire Interchange was built with a canopy to provide shade from the sun and rain. Each bound features three bus stopping points serving different destinations, with the northbound serving the Eastern District, Wan Chai and Central, and the Cross-Harbour Tunnel Bus-bus Interchange respectively; and the southbound direction for Aberdeen and Tin Wan, Wah Fu Estate and Cyberport, and Stanley respectively.

This was the first dedicated Bus-bus Interchange on Hong Kong Island, and the twelfth overall in Hong Kong, after the opening of the Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin Tunnel Bus-bus Interchange in 2024.

Other highlights for June—July 2026

During the week of 1 July 2026, numerous transport operators provide concessionary or free rides to passengers, celebrating the 29^th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
On 5 July 2026, Light Rail's Tuen Mun Swimming Pool Stop was officially renamed as Hoi Wong Road Stop, to reflect the situation after the swimming pool of the same name was relocated to the west of Tuen Mun, at the Tuen Mun Recreation and Sports Centre at San Shek Wan, Tuen Mun.
Kwun Tong's Yue Man Square and Tong Yan Street were closed on the night of 27 June 2026, as part of the works to relocate pipelines for future development of the area. All bus and minibus routes were rerouted to other surrounding roads, with some bus routes starting to serve the Yue Man Square bus terminus nearby.
On 3 July 2026, the announcement was made of the decision of the bus operators to run the new Huanggang Port bus routes. KMB won the Kwai Chung route, NLB the Wu Kai Sha route (via Pak Shek Kok and Tai Po) and Citybus the Tuen Mun and Kai Tak routes. The details of the bus services will be announced later.
KMB route 98B made its final morning peak-hour service on 20 July 2026 from Tseung Kwan O to Kwun Tong due to low patronage. After the cancellation of the bus route, passengers would have to travel on KMB route 98A.
